JUST days after her wedding, a bride has headed off to become a foster mother to 20 poverty-stricken street children in Mozambique.
Angela Burns, 29, is working a ten-minute drive from her new husband, Ben Nunn, who is involved in a construction project at Kedesh in the south-east African country.
Angela married Australian Ben at a ceremony in Harrogate after a whirlwind romance - and, days later, they jetted to Mozambique.
Angela is taking a nine-month career break from her role as head of carer services for adults at the Carers' Resource, in Harrogate, which gives practical help and backing to carers.
Carers' Resource director Anne Smyth said: "When Angela asked if she could take a career break to work with the children, I saw it as an extension of caring and encouraged it, even though it was far beyond our normal boundaries.
"She is keeping us up to date with her work by writing a regular column in our newsletter."
Angela is working in Beira with children aged between seven and 18. The coastal town is the second biggest city in Mozambique, a country devastated by civil war, flood, drought, landmines famine and Aids.
Angela has worked previously with street children in the country and, with her husband just a short distance away, said she could not resist the temptation to return.
Most of the children at the home where works had parents who died of HIV/Aids. The charity ensures they are clothed, fed and attend school.
