WORK to improve the safety of schoolchildren in a County Durham village has been scheduled to start in October.
Darlington Borough Council is to spend about £18,000 putting in traffic calming measures in Heighington, near Newton Aycliffe.
Heighington Primary has been dogged with traffic problems - because parents park on the pavements of narrow streets around the school, blocking access for others.
The council improvement work should take about ten days to complete.
The parish council hopes to tie it in with other improvement work in the nearby village sports field to make the journey to school safer for pupils and parents.
Darlington council will put in a pedestrian island, yellow lines and 20mph speed limit signs on Redworth Road in the village.
The parish council is going to put a 40-space car park in the sports field, which is on the other side of Redworth Road.
It is hoped parents will then use the car park when picking their children up from school, which should alleviate some of the traffic problems on the nearby roads.
The school is planning to install a gate and footpath from Redworth Road.
