A PILOT diabetes screening service has now screened more than 100 patients.

The one-year diabetes screening project, being piloted in the Wear Valley, has so far screened 101 patients.

The pilot, which operates in six community pharmacies, got under way in February.

Of the patients screened, 47 were invited back for a second test as their results indicated they were at medium risk of diabetes.

The project has been developed by the Durham Dales Primary Care Trust and Pharmacy Alliance. Funding has been provided by the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit.

The project hopes to develop a screening service in pharmacies across the Durham Dales to enable early diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Jason Forward, pharmacy business manager at the trust, said: "The screening service began well, but with an estimated 1,124 people with undiagnosed type two diabetes in the Durham Dales area, there is clearly some way to go to identifying all those at risk.

"Unfortunately, type two diabetes often occurs without any symptoms at all and this means that people can have the condition for sometimes up to ten years before it is diagnosed."
