WORKERS have begun building a fountain in a North-East town that will feature 100 jets of water.

The feature, in the centre of Middlesbrough, was yesterday described as a "mattress of foaming water" by the town's head of museums and galleries, Godfrey Worsdale.

It will take pride of place in a £5m civic square fronting a £19.2m cutting-edge design art gallery, on what was Victoria Gardens, between the town hall and magistrates' court.

Tons of cement are being used to form the basin of a 30-metre long pool, which will feature a fountain made up of 100 jets of water, each picked out by its own individual carbon fibre beam.
