SOLDIERS will be taking a Scottish-style high road to sporting success today.
The Gurkha Company at Catterick Garrison's Infantry Training Centre have organised their own fundraising Highland Games.
Competitors will battle it out in such traditional games as tossing-the-caber and throwing-the-wellie at the garrison stadium, in Leyburn Road.
Event organiser Major Bishnukumar Pun said: "The aim is to give the training centre's military and civilian staff, and their families, a great day out.
"This is the third year we've had the Highland Games and it's no coincidence that the commandant, Brigadier Hughie Monro, is himself a Highlander.
"Another important aspect is to raise money for charities. Last year, the games raised more than £5,700, a proportion of which was donated to the Mayor of Richmond's Trust. This year, the money will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance."
Brigadier Monro and Mayor of Richmond Stuart Parsons will be Highland Chieftains for the day and, in addition to taking part in some of the events, they will present prizes.
