YOUNG skateboarding enthusiasts are holding a fund-raising day to help pay for improvements.

The recently-formed Abbey Skate and Bike Association will hold the event at its skate park behind Abbey Leisure Centre, at Pity Me, on the outskirts of Durham, on Friday, August 26, between 11am and 4pm.

As well as displays of skateboarding expertise, attractions will include fancy dress and music.

"The group all have a vested interest in the skate park and want to improve it and see the usage grow," said Adrienne Hodgkiss, the neighbourhood warden for the area.

"What we want to do with this event is to get all of the community involved in some way. The group has convinced two local businesses to help them but they are looking for more.

"Both Northumbria Water and Campbell Vending are offering their support for the day.

"What we would like to see is more local business getting behind this event."

As well as the skating there will be the chance to get hands-on experience with a DJ workshop organised by Durham City Centre Youth Project and recently-formed local band Route 21.

Any businesses in the area who like to be involved in the event are asked to call Carl Marshall on 0191-301 8806.
