VISUALLY-IMPAIRED people are being offered the chance to gain computer skills.

The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted is running a computer mentoring scheme where visually impaired computer users are helping others to get started with speech synthetic and magnification packages.

Since the scheme started in January, 20 people who have lost their sight have taken part and benefited by gaining basic computer skills.

Visually-impaired mentor Calvin Hedley said: "I consider the mentoring scheme to be an ideal opportunity for visually impaired people to try out information technology and discover how versatile their computers can be in enhancing their lives."

The group is also keen to offer the mentoring service and other services, including talking newspapers and information services, to other visually-impaired people.
