A police spokesman said a man went into the Fortune Inn takeaway, in Felling, Gateshead, brandishing a knife and demanding money, at about 10.15pm on Friday.
He jumped over the counter and grabbed the till containing a small amount of cash. Staff were left shocked but uninjured.
Two men were then seen running off towards Oliver Henderson park.
Both were slim, wearing black ski masks and light- coloured hooded tops.
The first was between 5ft 10in and 6ft, and wearing dark coloured, leisure-style bottoms. The second was between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in.
