MORE than 300 youngsters turned out with their parents yesterday to put their artistic talents and nature knowledge to the test.
The children attended Ward Jackson Park, in Hartlepool, to make 20 bird boxes and face masks, all with a feathery theme.
The boxes, made from thorny branches and wood, will be camouflaged and put up around the park for birds to nest in this winter.
Children were invited to make three dimensional masks, in bright colours and complete with beaks, during the free art session, organised by Hartlepool Borough Council.
Countryside warden Steve Cooper said: "Events in Ward Jackson Park are always well-attended, and when we saw the weather this morning, we thought it would be good.
"But 300 children, plus their parents, really is exceptional. And they were all excellent, too.
"We did have enough materials - just about. It was a great day."
