BIKERS were in their element at the weekend when machines of all shapes and sizes were on display for the 11th Bikewise event.

The initiative is run by Durham Police's motorcycle section and was held at its headquarters in Aykley Heads, Durham, yesterday.

About 12,000 people attended.

There were displays, stalls, exhibitions and stunts, as well as appearances from world superbike champion James Toseland, British superbike championship leader Michael Rutter and British Supersport champion Karl Harris.

Bikes on show included the Honda Fireblade Yamaha R1 and Honda Goldwings.

The day aimed to get a serious safety message across.

Chief Constable Paul Garvin said: "It has long been accepted that ill-judged decisions by those who use our roads often lead to tragedy.

"For bikers, more vulnerable on two wheels rather than four, those split-second choices are, perhaps, more crucial.

"Our latest campaign to cut motorcycle deaths urges riders to wait a second, particularly before overtaking. We are grateful to James Toseland and other top British riders who have thrown the weight of their considerable support behind this initiative."

Chief Inspector Paul Goundry said: "The Bikewise event is our opportunity to share and promote our commitment to reducing road casualties and, at the same time, it allows those interested in motorcycling to come together and have an enjoyable day in a safe environment.

"Two motorcyclists have lost their lives in separate accidents in the county to date this year and my thoughts go out to their family and friends.

"If events like Bikewise can contribute to saving one life, then all the hard work is justified."
