Striker Simon Johnson is still awaiting his first goal since joining Darlington - but he could not have come much closer on Saturday, writes Craig Stoddart.
His powerful header seemed a certain goal until the Leyton Orient keeper produced a great save.
Glynn Garner leapt to his left to prevent Johnson hitting the goal and preserve all three points for the only team in the Football League still with a 100 per cent record.
After a shocking opening 45 minutes, as bad as an appalling first half at Orient back in February, a goal at that stage - midway through the second 45 - may have given Quakers the impetus to go on and win the game.
But Garner denied Darlington and so Johnson, who scored regularly in pre-season when he created a good first impression, must wait to get off the mark.
He said: "I thought the ball was going in the net but the keeper got a strong hand to it and unfortunately nobody could get hold of the loose ball.
"I was gutted it did not go in, it was a good save from the keeper but I am disappointed not to get a goal yet. I am going to keep working hard and hopefully that goal will come.
"I am desperate for a decent chance to come along. In all the pre-season games I had a one-on-one with the keeper or another good chance but it has not happened in the league yet, hopefully the goals will come soon.
"I do expect a bit more from myself. At the moment I'm still getting used to the rest of the team and they are getting used to the way I play. We've still got a few things to work on in training and, as a team, there is a lot more to come."
* David McGurk, on loan at York City, made his debut alongside ex-Quaker, Mark Convery, in Saturday's 0-0 draw at home to Crawley who handed a debut to former Darlington winger, Richard Hodgson.
Young defender Chris Mason is on loan at Harrogate Town who beat Hyde United 1-0 and also in the team were ex-Quakers Michael Price and Lee Nogan.
Ian Clark got his Scarborough career off to a poor start, losing 4-0 at Hereford but Chris Hughes, who has also joined the Seadogs, was not in the side.
