THE spotlight will be firmly on Attraction (2.50) at Newbury today following a frustrating season as far as the Middleham-based star is concerned, writes Colin Woods.
It's been a case of after the Lord Mayor's show for Attraction, who in 2004 claimed her place in the history books by becoming the first filly to land the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas double, but has failed to get off first base for the current campaign.
Having positively sparkled on the home gallops during the spring, Attraction then flew out to Hong Kong in May to participate in the immensely valuable Asia Champions Mile.
Regrettably the trip turned out to an unmitigated disaster as Attraction flopped in the race at Sha Tin, plus returned from the Far East with a problem to a fetlock joint.
"It was very disappointing, whether she sustained the injury out there and it affected her performance we don't know for sure, but she's fine now and in very good form," revealed trainer Mark Johnston.
The drop back from one-mile to seven-furlongs in the Group 3 Hungerford Stakes certainly isn't going to hinder Attraction, however several of her rivals are fit and fancied to make the Duke of Roxburge-owned four-year-old pull out all of the stops.
