TRUSTEES of a small 17th Century chapel have landed a classical coup.

The Allegri String Quartet, one of Britain's leading chamber music ensembles, will perform at the Sir William Turner almshouses' chapel at Kirkleatham, near Redcar, east Cleveland.

The concert, on September 15, will launch the 2005-2006 season of Classics at Kirkleatham, now in its sixth year.

The quartet marked its 50th birthday last year with major concert tours in the UK and abroad, including an appearance at the Wigmore Hall.

Daniel Rowland, first violin, is the concert-master of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon and has just been invited to lead the BBC Symphony Orchestra; Rafael Todes, violin, is leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; Swiss born viola player Dorothea Vogel was a soloist with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and at London's Wigmore Hall; cellist Pal Banda is from Budapest, where his father taught at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, and Pal teaches at the Purcell Room in London.

Concert organiser Peter Sotheran said: "We have had many brilliant musicians at Kirkleatham, but to be able to present the Allegri String Quartet is a real coup for classical enthusiasts in the region."
