Youngsters went pond dipping yesterday to learn more about the pond life.
The event at Low Barns Nature Reserve, in Witton-le-Wear, was organised by Durham Wildlife Trust as part of its programme of events for young people.
Mark James, of the trust, said: "The hunt was on to find and identify some of the many creatures that inhabit the ponds of the nature reserve, including newts, tadpoles, water beetles, bloodworms and leeches."
The trust has also organised other events at Low Barns, including a willow crafts session next Tuesday, and a series of games based on butterflies and dragons on Thursday, August 18.
Both run from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and cost £3 per child. Booking is essential and under eights must be accompanied by an adult. To book, call 0191-584 3112.
