WORK has finished on a new £60,000 village sports field.

Residents of Barton, near Darlington, raised almost £10,000 to improve the facility.

Work began in April after the Football Foundation gave a grant of £29,000, Richmondshire District Council donated almost £9,500 and Yorventure provided another £8,500, from the landfill tax credit scheme.

The site has been levelled, the cricket square turned and re-laid, a football pitch created and a drainage system installed.

Project co-ordinator Trevor Frankland said: "The improved facilities mean sport can be played here all year round and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to secure funding, as well as the people of Barton and surrounding area who have shown us fantastic support throughout the fundraising campaign."
