A SWEEP-UP operation is to brighten a seaside town and promenade.

Saltburn is the latest target of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to become eco-friendly as the result of a major initiative to improve the environment.

It is the Council's second Operation Eco (Environment Challenges Opportunity) project after a successful target of the Bankfields estate, in Eston, near Middlesbrough.

A multi-agency taskforce has scheduled a fortnight of clean-up activities, supported by community advice sessions and family-friendly events.

The environmental aspects of Operation Eco are targeted on two areas in Saltburn - the Jewel Streets, close to the railway station, and Queensway, The Parkway and Woodrow Avenue, off the A174.

Residents will benefit from a "deep clean" of their streets, together with an opportunity to dispose of unwanted items, and improvements to nearby public areas that include repairing and painting fences along the promenade.

Partners have come together to deliver housing advice and welfare rights surgeries, free smoke detector fitting, vouchers for free dog micro-chipping and advice on crime prevention.

Full details and a timetable of events are included in a leaflet that will also be available in local shops, Saltburn library and the Tourist Information Centre.

Councillor Bob Stanway, cabinet member for environmental improvement, said: "We've been encouraged by the huge success of our previous Operation Eco on Bankfields, which showed how popular this initiative is with residents. It is clear evidence of how committed we are to creating a clean, green and safe borough."
