A TEENAGER who skipped a probation appointment and then went on holiday to Turkey has been rebuked by a judge.

Lee Beazley, 19, was due to be sentenced yesterday at Teesside Crown Court after previously admitting charges of criminal damage and arson.

But the court heard that no pre-sentence report had been able to be prepared on him because of his absence.

Beazley, of Hedingham Close, Middlesbrough, had gone to see probation staff on his return from holiday, but by then, there was not enough time to prepare a report.

Adrian Dent, for Beazley, claimed he had informed the probation service of the holiday, which had been booked after he had pleaded guilty to the criminal matters, but before his scheduled appointment.

The judge, Recorder Anton Lodge, told Beazley he would pay £100 court costs, although this be would reviewed when he was eventually sentenced.

He said: "You have incurred some amount of unnecessary public expense by today's hearing."

The judge queried how Beazley had paid for his Turkish holiday as he was on benefits, but was told it had been paid for by his girlfriend.

He adjourned the case for a report and bailed Beazley until his return to court on September 9 with conditions that he observe a curfew between 9pm and 7am and live and sleep at his home address.

He told Beazley: "With some reluctance, I am granting you bail - but you must understand that the offences to which you have pleaded guilty are sufficiently serious for you to be sent to prison, so don't make any false assumptions about the fact I am giving you bail.
