A TOWN'S mining heritage is to be resurrected as an appeal is launched to create a new banner.
A group of ex-miners, descendants of miners and enthusiasts from Spennymoor aim to raise money to create a new banner so they can carry it with pride at the annual Durham Miners' Gala.
The idea was developed after it became evident that the town's existing banners were in such poor condition that they could not be used to represent the community at the popular event.
The Spennymoor Heritage Banner Appeal hopes to involve the community in its quest to create the new showpiece and is now actively applying for funding to help it with its quest.
A spokesman for the group said: "The North-East, and in particular towns like Spennymoor, are steeped in mining history. This would be an ideal opportunity to ensure that this heritage is never forgotten.
"Whilst we are actively involved in applying for funding, it would still be a massive boost to receive any personal donations."
The new banner will incorporate all the past lodges in the town and will be displayed at the Spennymoor Settlement (The Pitman's Academy).
