TODAY our thoughts are with seven Russian sailors entombed in a mini-submarine on the ocean floor.

It is hard to imagine what they have gone through, stranded on the seabed wondering if they would get out alive.

No doubt the men's thoughts turned to their comrades, who, five years ago, were trapped in the nuclear submarine Kursk, at the bottom of the Barents Sea. All 118 men onboard died.

When that tragedy happened, the Russians and the rest of the world were treated with a mixture of misinformation, half-truths and propaganda.

Offers of assistance from the West were rejected until the repeated failure of half-baked Russian rescue attempts.

From last night's efforts it seems Russia has learnt its lesson, showing signs of strength by welcoming help from other countries. If there are any further deep sea dramas, let's hope that the united nations will again come to the rescue.
