A NEW synthetic ice rink will be opened in the region today.
The ceremony starts at noon at The Sands, in Durham and will include an ice skating display by eight-year-old Northern Ireland champion, Demspey Andrews.
All takings from the first day will benefit the work of Breast Cancer Research and Muscular Dystrophy.
Catering firm boss Lesley Jones has hired a 405sq m surface for four weeks, to Saturday, September 4.
The city has been without an ice rink for several years, although temporary rinks have been set up at Christmas next to the Gala Theatre.
Ms Jones, who runs Yummy Bites, said that if her project was a success, she would see if a permanent synthetic rink could be set up somewhere in the area where ice hockey players could train.
