A RURAL theatre company set-up by a husband and wife team will stage its first production next week.
The Esk Valley Summer Theatre Company was founded by Mark Stratton and his wife, Sheila Carter, in Glaisdale, near Whitby.
The group will perform its first play, John Godber's September in the Rain, from August 9 to 28, in the recently refurbished Robinson Institute, in Glaisdale.
The play tells the story of Yorkshire couple Jack and Liz, and their annual holidays to Blackpool.
Mr Stratton, a professional actor who has played alongside Anthony Hopkins, will play Jack.
He said: "For several years we have talked about setting up some professional theatre in the Esk Valley, and finally we have made a commitment to doing it.
"We have always felt that rural communities get a raw deal when it comes to theatre provision and we would like to establish a regular annual event.
"We are already making plans for next year, but of course we have got to make this year a success first."
The play is directed by professional choreographer Ms Carter, who has worked on Broadway.
The couple held rehearsals at the York Theatre Royal for the part of Liz.
The actor selected was former Emmerdale star Mary Ryder, who played Lucy Dyer in the soap.
She has also played Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet and Viola in Twelfth Night.
The company has received support from the Arts Council England, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council, Glaisdale Parish Council and local sponsors.
Tickets for the show are available from Glaisdale Village Shop or by calling (01947) 897587.
