A BUDDING rugby squad has been given a helping hand.
Nigel Rooney, from Barnard Castle School, has been appointed director of sport at Raventhorpe School, in Carmel Road North, Darlington.
Until now, the school has concentrated on swimming, but Mr Rooney wants to develop other sports.
Fourteen boys and girls, aged eight and nine, were invited to a coaching session at Barnard Castle School run by rugby master Martin Pepper and under-18 England players Ross Batty and Alex Tait.
Mr Rooney, who plays rugby for Richmond, said: "Everyone really enjoyed it and it's great for the children to meet international players such as Ross and Alex."
Deputy headmaster at Barnard Castle, Oliver Marlow, said: "We are only too happy to share our expertise and facilities as we forge new friendships."
