The Georgian Theatre Royal, in Richmond, is to give candlelit tours to help visitors imagine how the venue looked in the late 18th Century.
Laura Hannaway, theatre spokeswoman, said: "The theatre is stripping back to its essentials to an age when candlelight lit the dark, and drama filled the empty nights.
"See the shutters and grooves for changing scenery, the stage traps and winches in the machine room, and the wooden benches without the comfort of backs and cushions.
"A replica of Britain's oldest hand-painted stage scenery will be on stage for you to view and compare with the original, which is for viewing in the exhibition space."
The tours will run from Monday to Saturday, August 8 to 13, on the hour, from 10am to 4pm.
