As the 60th anniversary of the final victory of the Second World War approaches, former combat veterans in the North-East are embarking on trips to battlefields across the world.
To mark the event, communities across the region are marking the end of the conflict and both groups have support from the Big Lottery Fund's veterans' schemes.
This week, the fund announced further awards under its £17m Heroes Return scheme to 1,698 veterans, spouses, widows and carers, who will be travelling overseas to remember comrades who did not return from the battlefields.
Forty-five people, whose awards were announced on Monday, live in the region, bringing the total number of people in the North-East receiving grants to 1,102.
The fund's £22.3m Home Front Recall scheme announced awards to 47 projects in the North-East, funding a diverse range of events including exhibitions, remembrance services, parades and tea parties.
