AN outdoor survival group that has opened the doors to the world for underprivileged youngsters in south-west Durham is taking a group of teenagers to Romania.
Ten members of the Pilgrim Club, Shildon, are embarking on a trip of a lifetime in September. But before they can go they need to raise £2,000.
Club founder Councillor John Cutting said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the kids. We are among clubs from six countries that are taking part. They are really looking forward to it and are now working really hard to come up with ideas to raise money.''
So far, the group has received £300 from county councillor Dorothy Bowman, £50 from Shildon Town Rugby Club and £78.30 from regulars at The Grey Horse pub in the town.
Donations, including a bottle of House of Commons whisky from Prime Minister Tony Blair, are also coming in for an auction.
The main fundraiser will be a fete at Hackworth Park, Shildon, on Saturday, September 3.
Coun Cutting said: "This is not going to be a relaxing holiday for them. They will be looking at how Romania tackles environmental issues and they will be planting trees and working on a reclaimed cycle route.
"This is just the start. We will be inviting the groups from the other countries to come across to England next year and hopefully we will visit their countries.''
Anyone who can sponsor the youngsters or donate money towards the trip can contact Coun Cutting on (01388) 775105.
