A NORTH-EAST cyclist has earned himself a tilt at a world championship crown.
Andy Conn has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Mountain Bike Orienteering World Championships in Slovakia in September.
Combining the map-reading skills of traditional orienteering with mountain bike riding, the sport attracts competitors from around the world.
The 39-year-old, from east Cleveland, said: "I have just returned from a week of training in Slovakia. It's a wonderful country and I can't wait to get back in September."
His performances throughout the year have seen Mr Conn selected along with another five men and five women.
He said: "I practice about six times a week, but this year I have been focusing on my map-reading skills. I was a competitive mountain bike racer, so by focusing on the orienteering aspect, I hope to improve my chances."
He has the full backing of his employer, Cleveland Potash, whose sponsorship has enabled him to compete in major events around the world.
"I'm going to Poland next week to compete and the support and sponsorship of my bosses and Bike Scene, in Guisborough, means I can compete at the highest level," he said.
The championship, which takes place between September 2 and 11, will be held in the countryside around Banska Bystrica.
