NEWCASTLE UNITED must pay £5m for Fulham's Luis Boa Morte and have also been told to double that figure if they want to land striker Nicolas Anelka.

The Magpies made two separate bids on Thursday and their opening offer for Boa Morte - believed to be around £4m - was dismissed out of hand yesterday morning.

But Newcastle - still looking for five new players - have received indications the Portuguese international wants to move to St James' Park and are not about to give up in their pursuit.

Fulham value Boa Morte at nearer £7m but the indications are the Craven Cottage club will accept a figure £2m below that in a bid to strengthen their own hand in the transfer market.

Cottagers boss Chris Coleman is resigned to losing the left-sided forward this summer but he is not prepared to let him go on the cheap - particularly after persuading him to sign a new three-year deal in January.

Fenerbahce have so far given no answer to Newcastle's offer for Anelka, who is another known to be keen on moving back to the Premiership.

The Frenchman has been asked to play on the wing during his first six months in Turkey and would relish the chance to play up front again at Newcastle.

But manager Graeme Souness' hopes of landing Anelka could be scuppered by the Turkish side's prohibitive asking price. Having paid £7m for the 26-year-old at the start of the year, Fenerbahce are determined to make a sizeable profit if they are forced to sell.

And Souness, who also admitted he expects to miss out on Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia, said; "We made a couple of offers for Boa Morte and Anelka. They were the first official offers we have made.

"I don't know what the situation is because I leave the negotiations in the hands of the chairman. I give him a list and he works on those.

"We want five players here - that's another five on top of the two we have brought in."

Newcastle should secure an Intertoto Cup semi-final place today by completing the aggregate win over Slovakians Dubnica.

Souness' side have a 3-1 lead from last Sunday's first leg and a disappointing crowd is expected inside the ground this afternoon - with only 8,500 tickets sold by 10am yesterday morning.

The encounter will not offer the chance for Geordie supporters to get their first glimpse of summer signings Emre and Scott Parker.

Both are to step up full training on Monday and could be involved in either of the next round's games, which are expected to be against Deportivo La Coruna.

There is also no place in the squad for Kieron Dyer who continues to struggle with a hamstring problem and Souness is treading carefully.

"I'm not best pleased about his problem," said Souness. "He's a big part of this squad. He's an explosive player and we have to get to the bottom of it.

"He has been doing extra training and we are looking at improving on that. I'm taking it for granted that he will be ready for the Arsenal game at Highbury (August 14)."

He added: "As far as Scott Parker's concerned, he can start crunching a few in training from Monday. He is desperate to get going. He's like a puppy on a lead and we will let him off the lead on Monday."

There will be no Hugo Viana in action, with his Newcastle future still in the balance.

German side Stuttgart have approached Newcastle about taking the midfielder on a season-long loan but Souness is only interested in doing business for cash.

Viana missed out on a move to Sporting Lisbon for the same reason and has been training with the club.

Newcastle will accede to Viana's request not to play in the Intertoto Cup because the Portugal international believes it will cup tie him for future UEFA Cup or Champions League matches - but that is not the case.

"Hugo had a conversation with me and he felt if he played in the Intertoto Cup that it might stop him from playing in the UEFA Cup for another club," said Souness.

"I have told Hugo that I will not use him unless I really, really need to."

Attacking midfielder James Milner has revealed the rest of the squad have hammered Alan Shearer for trying to claim the second goal of Newcastle's win in Dubnica.

Shearer is still on 192 Newcastle goals after UEFA insisted he did not manage to get a touch to Charles N'Zogbia's deflected cross before it crossed the line.

And Milner, who scored the stunning third, said: "Alan has said a few things about it. Strikers want every goal they can get and Alan is obviously the same.

"But I personally couldn't believe it and some of the lads thought he had a nerve trying to claim it as well."

Newcastle are confident the club's remaining 2,300 season tickets will be sold before the start of the league campaign.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "There is still a month to go before our first Premiership home game against West Ham and those tickets will gradually sell."

l Former Newcastle United number two John Carver is the new head coach at Leeds United.

''I'm delighted that John has agreed to come. He brings a wealth of experience and is one of the major signings of the summer for us,'' Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell said. ''He's young and positive, and I'm looking forward to working with him.''
