The weather prevented Dave Pennock from coming face to face with his son Stephen in last week's Darlington Building Society NYSD League Division One match, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

Dave captains Guisborough's second team and Stephen plays for his home village club Great Ayton.

The pair should have been in opposition but rain washed out the fixture.

"I moved to Guisborough after ten years playing for Great Ayton, who failed to gain promotion in the NYSD League even though they had won the division four years in succession," said Dave.

"I have had 18 happy years at Guisborough and played all the time in the first team until this season when I decided, because of my age and a problem with my knee, to drop down and skipper the Second XI.

I have enjoyed every minute in the game and always urged Stephen to play from a young age.

"He has really taken to the sport and I am pleased he is playing for Great Ayton.

"I think it's better if father and son are not at the same club so there is no conflict," added Dave.

Stephen, 16, is now in the Great Ayton First XI and was looking forward to batting against his dad last weekend.

"Skipper Andy Middlemiss has been putting me in at number three so there was every chance I would have faced my dad. It would have been interesting, to say the least," he joked.

"I want to improve my game playing for Great Ayton where I captain the under-17 side.

"Last year I scored nearly 600 runs in the Second XI and the club is giving me my chance in the first team."

Meanwhile the loyalties of mum Kay are with Great Ayton.

"I help make the teas and watch Stephen play.

" I have been involved with the club for a long time since Dave's days and now I am happy that Stephen is involved with the club," she said.
