Elswick Harriers

Only nine points separated first and second place in Saturday's Northern Men's League Division Three North-East meeting at York with Harriers' senior men's team recording 269 points to beat rivals Durham to top spot.

With the team performing well, Shaun Hudson took pride of place when he set a personal best of 41.09m in the hammer.

He completed a great afternoon with second place in the discus, after recording 28.09m, and a winning throw of 37.41m in the javelin.

Dave Slipper amassed over 30 points for the club in the long and high jump, pole vault, triple jump and both the 110m and 400m hurdles.

Dean Hanson won the 100m and 200m while there were maximum points in the 400m for David Anderson (52.6) and Michael Furness (53.3).

Anderson then completed the double by taking the 800m in 1:57.5 with Stephen Horn second in the B event with 2:03.7 and also runner-up in the 1500m with 4:08.1.

In the 5000m A race Jim Bell took third place with Nigel Barnes also third in the B event.

Terry Hanson gave his usual consistent performance to pick up valuable points in the discus B event with 27.26m and first place in the hammer B with 32.83m.

Bob Philipson won the Over-60s race at the Low Fell 10km road race on Sunday, finishing in a time of 40:53. Suzanne Morton was fourth in the women's race with 40:58, just ahead of Yvonne Swinhoe who was fifth in 42:37.

At the North-East Veterans track and field league at Jarrow Harry Matthews won the 3000m in 9:59.0 while Terry Hudson continued his good form with victory in the shot putt with a throw of 11.25m.

Alison Raw took first place in the women's race at the Melmerby 10km road race after finishing 29th overall in 36:52.

Nigel Orr was first home for the club in fifth spot with 33:04, Martin Grainger was 13th in 34:32 and Paul Kelly 18th in 35:29, their wins securing the men's team trophy for the club.

Richard Smith won the two-mile fun race in 15:20 while Andrew Smith came home in 16th spot.

The senior men's team were narrowly beaten into second place by Elswick Harriers in the Northern Men's Division Three League meeting at York.

Durham finished nine points behind the winners and, with two matches remaining, share top spot with them on 11 points apiece.

Mandale Harriers

The club's talented juniors produced another excellent set of performances to win the latest Northern Premier round of the McDonald's Young Athletes League at Trafford, Manchester.

Peter Vickers received the track athlete of the match award after winning the Under-17 100m in 11.3 secs, while Charles Hogarth was named field athlete of the match for his victory with a throw of 40.76m in the U-15 hammer.

Other results U-13: L. Hardwich (100m 14.0 secs) and L. Stockton (1500m 5:23); U-15: J. Baines (100m 12.2 secs), N. Rafferty (3000m 9:44.3); J. Herring (high jump 1.65m). They also won the short relay; U-17: M. Harman (400m 51.7 secs), N. Williams (3000m 9:16.4), A. Bibby (100m hurdles 14.1 secs) and D. Mason (hammer 51.49m). Shildon Running and AC

Shildon will be hosting the Primary Schools' Track and Field Games at the Stadium 2000, Shildon on Thursday, June 15, 4-6pm.

Teams of five children - with a maximum of two teams for both boys and girls - from primary schools will contest the 60m, 300m, 800m, long jump and cricket ball throwing with one member of each team in each of the events. All five members will take part in the relay.

All competitors will receive commemorative prizes with group prizes awarded to the winning groups.

URLAY Nook kept up their 100 per cent league record with a narrow home victory by three birds over newcomers Oak Lodge.

High scorers for the Nooks in their 156-153 victory were Derek Dowson and John Hutchinson with 22s.

Ron and Andy Calvert replied with similar scores for the Oaks.

In a high-scoring match at Thimbleby, the home team narrowly beat Spennymoor 189-187.

For the Thimbles, Bill Mayhew, S Mackay and P Thomas scored perfects, while Keith Kipling scored a 25 for the Moors.

Welbury flew past the RAF Catterick team of Marne CC with a solid 172-139 victory.

A Oliver scored a 24 for Welbury, while Marne's Phil and Tony Masters scored 20s.

In the Stokesley derby, SDNY beat Stokesley by five birds, 157-152.

P Smith, J Garside, A Southworth, G Wright and A Warne top scored for the SDNY team with 20s.

Stokesley had the consolation of the top score of the night with Adam Wallace's 23.

Great Smeaton held home advantage in their meeting with Fox Hall and comprehensively beat the visitors 176-167.

Paul Foster scored a near perfect 24 for Smeaton, while Vic Wilson and P Hugill scored 22's for the Foxes.
