WORK to create better access for horseriders along a cycle route has won plaudits from the British Horse Society (BHS).
A Route Creation Award was presented jointly to Derwentside Byways and Bridleways Association, Sustrans, Durham County Council and Derwentside District Council for the new route linking Buryedge to Beamish, in County Durham.
Most of the route is on Sustrans' Consett to Sunderland Railway Path, which forms part of the C2C cycling and walking route from Workington and Whitehaven to Sunderland and Newcastle.
Riders are accommodated alongside the railway path or provided with an alternative route, rejoining the main path at a suitable point.
