A DRIVER was pulled from his overturned car after an accident in Chester-le-Street yesterday.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was freed by firefighters and strapped to a spinal board after the crash, on the Drum Industrial Estate.
The collision, involving a Nissan Primera and Volvo 460 saloon, is thought to have happened when one vehicle pulled out into Drum Road from a side road, at about 10.45am.
The Nissan overturned, coming to a halt on the hard shoulder.
The driver had a suspected back injury, and was taken to Newcastle's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance.
The driver of the other car, in his early 60s, was taken to Dryburn Hospital with chest injuries.
Sub officer Brian Smith, of Chester-le-Street fire station, said: "We were at the scene for about 40 minutes, during which time we had to clear the road of debris.
"The police were also at the scene trying to restore some sort of calm."
