POLICE in Darlington estimate that thefts from cars cost drivers thousands of pound each month and are calling on car owners to take responsibility for their vehicles - and just as importantly what they leave inside them.
Acting Chief Inspector Eddie Bond, of Darlington Police, said: "From May 11 to June 11, there were goods worth more than £16,000 stolen from cars in Darlington. "That's around £500 every day and the figure does not include items that have yet to be priced. With those added on the figure is likely to be even higher, and it does not include vehicles that are stolen.
"What we want is people to take more responsibility and keep all valuables locked up and not on display."
Although car crime in the town centre is on the decrease with CCTV cameras in operation, thieves are now targeting areas on the outskirts of the town.
Police have put operations in place to combat the thefts, but say that car owners must also play their part.
l Overnight on Tuesday car break-ins were reported in Woodland Terrace, Millbank Road, Hundens Lane, Rydal Road, Victoria Embankment, Westminster Road and Coniscliffe Road. Anyone with information should contact Darlington police on (01325) 467681.
