A LURCHER found dumped in a cage with one of its back legs hanging off was recovering last night.
A veterinary surgeon was forced to amputate the hind leg, which was too badly damaged to be saved.
But the young lurcher is said to be on the mend and is expected to live a fit and happy life.
RSPCA officials yesterday appealed for information to track down the person who dumped the dog by the side of the A19, near Portrack, Teesside.
A member of the public alerted an RSPCA inspector after discovering the dog.
Chief Inspector Neil Mitchell said the dog was in a very poor condition when found, but was starting to make a recovery.
"If anyone knows the previous owner, or saw someone unloading the box and took a registration number, we need to know," he said.
"We need any lead which will help us track down the owner."
When the dog is fit enough to leave Bridge Vets, in Victoria Road, Middlesbrough, it is expected to go to the RSPCA shelter in Great Ayton. If no owner comes forward it will be found a new home.
Anyone with any information should contact the RSPCA on 08705 555999.
