THE former lover of child killer Colin Bainbridge has said she intends to change the name of the baby son they had together.

Andrea McKenzie does not want 16-month-old Keiran to have any reminder of his father.

Bainbridge abducted nine-year-old Laura Kane from her home, raped and murdered her and buried her body under the floorboards in his living room.

Today, as he faces sentence for his crimes, Andrea, 34, is preparing to cut off all links with her former boyfriend of five years.

She said she has no choice but to leave her home village of Murton, east Durham, because of the shadow cast by Bainbridge's crimes.

Andrea said: "One day my lad is going to have to read about all this in the newspapers. I have already decided to change his name and I am going to move away before he starts school - I am not going to put him through that.

"'I just don't want to be associated with it any more."

Laura's body was found at 35-year-old Bainbridge's house.

Andrea said: "The last few months have been an absolute nightmare, sheer hell.

"Everyone has been very supportive towards me, but I can't even begin to describe what it has been like. I just feel sickened at being connected with it in any way."

A jury at Newcastle Crown Court last week found him guilty of raping and murdering Laura, of Penshaw, near Sunderland.
