FORMER stars of the football field in the North-East proved they are more at home on the golf course these days.
A number of ex-Sunderland favourites, including many of the 1973 FA Cup-winning squad, took to the fairways of the Ramside Hall course at Carrville, near Durham, in a pro-celebrity charity golf tournament.
Twenty-one teams, each including at least one Roker Park veteran, took part in the competition, organised by the Sunderland Former Players' Association.
It was the second annual golf event organised by the association, and was followed by a dinner for 250 at the adjoining Ramside Hall Hotel, with guest speaker Steve Kindon and comedian Bobby Knoxall.
Proceeds will be passed on to a local charity, yet to be selected by the organising committee.
Among the famous names from the past taking part were Bob Stokoe, the manager of the 1973 FA Cup-winning side, plus players Ron Guthrie, Jim McNab, George Mulhall, Mick Horswill, Alan Kennedy, Bobby Kerr, Vic Halom, George Herd, Jeff Clark, Bob Moncur, Colin Suggett, David Young, Chris Turner, John Dillon, Nicky Sharkey, Eric Gates, Gary Moore, Cecil Irwin, Ritchie Pitt, Jim Montgomery, plus guest, ex-Leeds, Everton and Nottingham Forest star Duncan McKenzie.
