AN elderly woman was left with a black eye after she was mugged for her shoulder bag.
The unnamed 74-year-old was attacked while on a shopping trip in Front Street, Witton Gilbert, at 8.15am on Saturday.
A youth came up behind her, pushed her to the ground, and ran off with her black leather shoulder bag containing a small amount of cash.
The victim, who had earlier been walking with her husband, also suffered a cut hand and was left extremely shocked.
The robber, who was aged 18 to 20, ran off towards Sacriston Lane.
He was described as 5ft tall, thin, with a pale thin face and dark, short hair. He wore a loose fitting red and white top and shiny black, silky-textured trousers.
Detective Sergeant Denise Pearn, of Durham City CID, said: "This was an abysmal attack on a defenceless elderly lady who was left in a very shocked state.
"We would urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery to get in touch as they could have important information which might help us find the person responsible."
Durham City police can be contacted on 0191-386 4222.
