PEOPLE in the Sedgefield borough are being urged to beware of thieves targeting garden furniture and ornaments.
Thefts of garden ornaments, hanging baskets, benches and even conifer trees have been reported to police in the area in recent weeks.
One of the main areas affected by the horticultural crimewave has been Newton Aycliffe, but Sedgefield police say people in the whole borough should take care.
"If people can just be aware and, when they are not using items, they are locking them away," said PC Ian Colclough.
He said that hanging baskets can be secured with cable ties, such as those used to secure car wheel trims.
Anyone who would like security advice, or who has information about garden thefts, should contact police on (01325) 314401.
