Hartlepool Burn
Road Harriers
Distance runners have been competing mainly in Yorkshire recently with the visits to Durham too. Coxhoe's six mile multi-terrain race saw the in-form Mike Frostick (V2) take 11th place with Geoff Gardner having a great run for 28th. On his way back to fitness is Bob Stonehouse finished 44th.
Gardner then travelled to Barnard Castle for a hilly ten-miler and had an excellent run, battling it out with close rivals from a Durham club.
He finished in 43rd place and took first vet O50 place.
The Black Sheep race series came next with the second race (10k) being held in Melmerby, near Ripon. Mark Armstrong set a personal best in 33.44 for an excellent eighth place while Frostick also ran well to retain the top Vet O50 position in 22nd place (36.07). Graham Steven (V1) came in 34th in 37.30.
Athletes had to face wind and rain throughout the entire Thirsk ten-miler in which Steve Bailey (V1) was 32nd in 58.39 followed by (V2) 43rd in 60.06, Dave Edwards (V1) 47th 61,32, Graham Stevens (V1) 53rd 61.59 and Peter Johnson (V1) 74.34.
In the tough challenging Swaledale marathon, a 24-mile off road course with 3,500 feet of climbing involved, Karl Edwards (V1) finished in fifth position in what was his sixth Swaledale run with a time of 3hrs 33mins.
Lynne Radford, also a veteran of this event, ran brilliantly for 29th place taking second lady and first lady veteran prizes in 4hrs 7mins. Lynne could have covered the course quicker but a navigational error saw her having to climb out of an extra steep valley.
Johnson, also battled round the stamina sapping course for 147th place in 5hrs 5mins.
Patricia Hanson in only her second attempt at an off road marathon, knocked 23 minutes off last year's time finishing in 174th place with a time of 5hrs 22mins.
Durham City Harriers
Durham City Harriers hosted the 35th Croxdale 10 mile road race which incorporated the Veterans North East Championship and an open five mile race.
Ian Crampton was once again Durham City's leading runner finishing a very creditable sixth place on this undulating and scenic rural course made more difficult by the head wind on the return journey in each of the four laps. Nevertheles Ian's time of 57.11 was good, and retained the trophy as the Harriers ten mile champion.
Andy Billett also had a fine run finishing 11th in a time of 60.36 which confirmed his recent good form. The race was won by Ian Haggan of Sunderland Harriers.
In the five mile race Graham Hunt had an excellent run finihsing fourth. Brian Rusford of Sunderland Harriers finished in a time of 27.30 while Roger Wright was the first veteran for the club finishing 15th 33.26, and was followed by Glen Malvern (19th in 36.48). Kevin Kirkup, who for many years was the race organiser of the Croxdale Ten donned his trainers and cruised round finishing 24th in 43.03. he still found time to assist Race Director Mike Abbott and others in what proved to be a very good, well-organised race.
