With the course suffering from an excessive amount of water it was necessary to combine the June Medal with the Rouse Cup which should have been played over two separate weekends.

Hartlepool Burn
Road Harriers
Burn Road runners have recently compted in three different counties with visits to Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire.
A six mile multi-terrain race in Coxhoe saw the in-form Mike Frostick (V2) take 11th place with Geoff Gardner (V2) having a great run in 20th position. Bob Stonehouse who is on his way back to fitness after a long lay-off came home in 44th place.
Geoff Gardner later travelled to Barnard Castle for a hilly ten-miler and had an excellent run, battling it out with close rivals from a Durham club. Geoff finished in 43rd position and took the first Vet 0-50 but due to a late entry was not eligible for a prize.
The Black Sheep Series came next with the second race (10k) being held in Melmerby near Ripon. Mark Armstrong stormed to a personal best in 33.44 for an excellent eighth position. Mike Frostick (22nd) ran well again to retain the Vet 50 top position in 36.07 and hopefully his form will see him win this series (no Carol Vorderman dates for Mike this time!). The third of this committed trio was Graham Stevens, running well, and consistent for 34th place in 37.30.
The Thirsk 10 miler was the next venue on the calendar with athletes having to face wind and rain throughout the entire race. Steve Bailey (V1) was the first home in 32nd place (58.39). Steve did extremely well considering how difficult it is for him to train consistently due to his offshore activities. Steve was followed by Mike Frostick (V2) in 43rd place (60.06) who is taking Vet 50 prizes in nearly every race he enters.
Dave Edwards (V1) 47th (61.32), Graham Stevens. (V1) 53rd (61.59), Peter Johnson (V1) 220th (74.34).
It has become a tradition for several Hartlepool runners to take part in the carnival atmosphere at the 5.7 miles Blaydon race.
Mick Lamb was first to finish in an excellent 30.19. Paul Alderson was next in 37.44 which was consistent with his previous attempts at this race. Paul's dad Barry wasn't far behind and finished in 45.30, well up on last year's time. Debbie Blackwood knocked six minutes off her previous time to finish in 47.22, followed by Doreen Alderson in 48.02 who is improving with every attempt. Mother and daughter team Carol Westhorp and Maxine Ashby finished together in 54.22, a significant improvement on Maxine's previous outing.
Reeth was the starting point for four Burn Road athletes who had entered the challenging off-road Swaledale Marathon. The route is a circular 24 miles with 3500ft of hill work not to mention the downhill sections, and attracts over 500 entrants.
Karl Edwards' first 18 miles went according to plan but he then started to tire and suffered cramp over the last three miles in the hot and sunny conditions. Only losing one place, he finished in an excellent fifth position in 3hrs 33mins.
Next home for the club and in the second of the lady's positions was Lynne Radford in a brilliant 29th place (4.07) and also taking first Lady Vet prize. This achievement is even more remarkable as Lynne had gone off course and had to put in an extra steep climb to get back on track, as did half a dozen other runners who had followed her!
Peter Johnson covered this stamina-tapping course in 5hrs 5mins for 147th place and found it very tough. Peter also suffered from cramp but is already looking forward to doing it again next year.
Patricia Hanson took up the challenge for the second year running and knocked 25 minutes off her previous time despite suffering badly from cramp in the latter half of the run she managed to limp to the finish in 5hrs, 22 mins in 174th position.
In Croxdale there was a choice of races, ten miles or five miles. Mike Frostick, Burn Road's top Vet 0-50 chose the ten mile event and had another great run over this two-lap undulating course. Mike again enjoyed victory in his category taking the top spot in 61.26. Mick Lamb was back in action in the five mile race after running at Blaydon two days previously and performed well for fifth place in 28.02.
Tracy Waller, Burn Road's top lady runner not only had an excellent run to win V' Lady but set a new course record in 32.03.
A brave squad of Burn Road Harriers competed at Newton Aycliffe last weekend to tackle the 10k race in heatwave conditions.
First home for the club in 22nd position was Mike Frostick as the in-form Over 50 veteran taking third prize after a hard battle with some top north-east veterans. Mike's training partner Graham Stevens (V1) followed in 33rd position (38.13) with a consistent run despite the heat.
Burn Road Ladies team was led by Pauline Ranson (V1) in 154th position (51.57). Now fully recovered from the London Marathon, she was closely followed by Pat Hanson (V2) in 161st position (52.22) who was still feeling the effects of the previous weekend's Swaledale Marathon. Barry Alderson (V1) and wife Doreen (V2) finished in 171st and 207th respectively (53.30) and (56.28) in their first attempt at this venue. Sally Sharples (V1) in her inaugural 10K race was happy to complete the run in 211th place (56.38). Completing the female squad was Carol Westhorp in 61.50.
Alex Clark (U16 girl) was the only club junior to compete in the two mile event preceding the main race. She did not enjoy competing in the heat but finished an excellent third in her category (13.31) and 15th overall.
Further afield Dennis Wake competed in one of the hardest road marathons in the country - the Stoke-on-Trent Potteries Marathon. In extreme heat and despite the repetitive hills (from 1500. Registered competitors only 1034 completed the course), Dennis finished in a creditable four hours in 182nd position.
