PLANS to convert a former Methodist chapel at Morton-on-Swale into an antiques showroom have been supported by Hambleton councillors following a site visit.
One full-time worker will be employed at the showroom, which will be open six days a week, including Sundays.
Hambleton planning committee was asked to reject the application by the parish council, which said passing trade would be taken away from the village post office, shop and butcher because there would be more parking in the layby in front of the chapel on the A684.
Planning officers said, however, that no restrictions could be placed on using the layby because it was a public parking area. Other alternative uses for the building might generate even more traffic.
The committee stipulated that railings outside the chapel must be retained.
