A TIGHTLY-KNIT farming community was last night trying to come to terms with the death of popular farmer in a horrific holiday accident in Turkey.

Colin Mitchelson, 49, a County Durham farmer, died when he and the pilot of a para-glider he had hired crashed into a mountainside. The pilot was also killed.

According to friends, Mr Mitchelson and his wife, Susan, had extended their ten-day holiday in Turkey to two weeks because they were enjoying it so much.

He had been talking about making a para-glide throughout the holiday - and finally decided to do it on the last day of their stay.

Mrs Mitchelson was believed to be back home last night at the family farm, Dene House, Tow Law.

Boyhood friend Brian Craig, of Stanhope, said the whole community was devastated by Mr Mitchelson's death.

"We have been told that he was wanting to do a para-glide during the whole of his holiday, and he finally made it on the last day.

"Tragically, he and the pilot crashed into a mountainside and they were both killed. It's a terrible thing to happen. Susan and him had decided to extend their holiday because they were enjoying it so much."

Mr Craig said: "Colin was always ready to have a go at most things.

"He was a great Newcastle United supporter and he will be sadly missed by all his pals who also supported the club," he said.

It is an even more devastating blow to the family because Mr Mitchelson's daughter, Julie, is due to be married in five weeks time. He also leaves a son, Stephen.

His father, Kingsley, also helped to run the family farm.

Neighbour and friend Jack Gibson, of Hall Hill Farm, Satley, said: "It's a devastating blow for the family.

"Colin was one of the most progressive farmers and cattle dealers in the area. His death is a great loss to the community.
