YOUNGSTERS and their grandparents put their best foot forward yesterday to help a charity and help pay for better facilities.
Many of the 230 infant and junior pupils at Red Rose Primary School, in York Terrace, Chester-le-Street, were joined by their relatives for a sponsored toddle around the school field.
The event was held to raise money for the Cancer Research Campaign, and pay for planned improvements at the school.
Teacher Monica Lawlor said: "There is nothing in the grounds at the moment for the kids. We'd like to have areas for seating, areas of shade and an area for early years pupils.
"Our school is well used and the grounds are not just for the pupils because football matches are staged here and we get spectators coming. We are looking to get local companies to sponsor the grounds.
"One of the teachers, Tom Baker, won the lifetime achievement award in the Teaching Award 2000 presentations this week. We are very proud of him.''
Anyone who can help support the project can contact the school on 0191-388 6251.
