MIDDLESBROUGH boss Bryan Robson's Euro 2000 talent hunt has taken in a fresh look at France striker Sylvain Wiltord.

Robson was present when the £6m-rated Bordeaux goalscorer made his first start of the tournament as an under-strength French side went down 3-2 to fellow Group D qualifiers Holland in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.

The Boro manager's main interest naturally centred on Christian Karembeu, the French midfielder who is bound for the Riverside Stadium in a £2.4m move from Real Madrid.

Robson was eager to assess Karembeu's form, but also took the opportunity to cast his eye over Wiltord.

The 26-year-old came under Robson's scrutiny four months ago when the Boro boss watched him in action for Bordeaux.

Wiltord, who has also been eyed by Newcastle, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, was the leading scorer in the French League two seasons ago with 28 goals, but managed only 13 last term as Bordeaux finished fourth in the table.

However, his early promise has prompted interest from a host of clubs in Europe and Spanish champions Deportivo La Coruna have first option when Wiltord becomes available.

Robson will have been impressed with Wiltord's display against the Dutch, when he partnered David Trezeguet.

Monaco marksman Trezeguet claimed a goal after he deflected the ball in from Wiltord's thunderous shot.

But Wiltord does have one goal to his name, having scored in the last minute of France's opening 3-0 win over Denmark.

Trezeguet has also been linked with Boro, but after hitting 22 goals in the principality's title-winning side, he looks destined for a lucrative move to Italy.
