Geordie was the only regional English accent to register any significant sex appeal, with eight per cent of the vote in the survey, carried out for the Alliance and Leicester building society.

The Birmingham ''Brummy'' accent was considered the least sexy, with just 1 per cent of the nation's vote. Irish and Scottish accents were voted the sexiest in Britain.

Other findings were that the Liverpool ''Scouse'' accent, Cornish and Essex accents were unpopular, each gaining only two per cent of the vote, with only three per cent finding the London Cockney lilt sexy.

A sample of 1,000 people were asked which regional accent they found sexiest when dealing with their savings over the phone.
