PEOPLE are being urged to help a major green scheme celebrate its tenth anniversary by joining in the fun at a festival this weekend.
The Green North Forest is holding its annual Penshaw Festival of the Trees, at Penshaw Monument, between Chester-le-Street and Sunderland, on Sunday.
The festival, which is in its eighth year, will feature hands-on craft activities, a community marquee, a giant sculpture, kite flying, pony rides, performers, jugglers and a banner display.
More than 200 pupils from local schools will be giving drama performances on the theme of transformation, which they have been developing for the past two months.
Chris Growcott, programmes manager for the Great North Forest and organiser of all eight festivals, said: "In 1998 more than 3,000 people along and shared in a wonderful day out. It is a credit to the young people of the area who invest so much positive energy into making the day the success it is.''
The festival, between noon and 5.30pm, is sponsored by the Great North Forest, Sunderland City Council, Northern Arts, RJB Mining, The National Trust, and OneNorth-East, and is managed by Arts Resource. Admission is free.
