A COUNCIL'S campaign for a national licensing scheme for private landlords will go under the spotlight today, as representatives from local authorities across the country meet in Gateshead to discuss the issue.
The campaign, launched at the House of Commons last year by Gateshead Borough Council's cabinet member with responsibility for housing, Peter Mole, has attracted the support of more than 80 other local authorities.
It arose out of repeated complaints from residents about the actions of a small number of private landlords and the anti-social behaviour and chaotic lifestyles of their tenants.
The proposed scheme would force private landlords to satisfy a range of conditions before they are allowed to operate.
It would ensure properties are fit for habitation, landlords and property managers have no relevant convictions and all landlords operate a letting policy which includes the vetting of new tenants.
Licences would be refused or revoked if landlords fail to carry out essential repairs or refuse to deal with anti-social behaviour.
Private Sector Housing - a Need for Action will be held from 10.30am at Gateshead Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead.
