NEWCASTLE United want to buy Jackie Milburn's medals and make them a centrepiece of their new museum.
And the footballing legend's family say they would be delighted to see them go to St James's Park - for the sake of the fans.
But they are also considering an offer from an unnamed, company to buy them and return them to the family.
Jackie's son, also called Jackie, said: "I think my mother's idea is to have them all together in a proper display at last. She's not rich, but no one in the family would ever let her go short or anything like that.
"We'd love them to go to St James's or somewhere else where Newcastle fans can see them.
"A lot of the memorabilia are all over the place or gone forever."
A Newcastle United spokesman said: "We've asked the auctioner to send us a list of items and we will see what we can do. We would obviously love to have them here.
"Our old museum had to be broken up while we redevelop the ground and these medals would obviously be perfect for our new one.
