VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help members of their community return to learning.
Community Champions will talk and work with people across the borough, encouraging them to improve their basic skills and gain confidence, in reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and information and computer technology.
Stockton Borough Council is the only authority in the Tees Valley to become involved in the pilot scheme.
The first group of volunteers started training yesterday.
John Harris, adult education officer for the council said: "The Community Champions project is a great idea, and we think it will encourage people to return to learning without fear of failure, and with the support and encouragement of a friend."
Community Champions are needed in the Victoria, Parkfield, Ragworth and Primrose Hill areas of Stockton. For more information, and details on how to get involved, contact Julie Walker on (01642) 393537, or Margot Wade on (01642) 397365.
