DURHAM County Council has introduced a new telephone number, which is easier to remember.
Officials at County Hall, in Durham City, can now be reached on 0191-383 3000.
The old number, 0191-386 4411, is still working but will eventually be phased out.
The new main exchange number will standardise the first three digits of County Hall telephone numbers and help to reduce confusion.
The council's telecommunications manager, John Baharie, said: "The new number, 0191-383 3000, should also be a lot easier to remember. Taken into account with the other measures we have introduced, getting in touch with the county council has never been easier."
The council also recently launched its improved website.
The site, which can be reached at www.durham.gov.uk has 900 pages of information and can be used to report street light faults, get bus times and job vacancies.
The authority has also installed free Internet access for the members of all its libraries, and set up 12 computerised contact points at key branch libraries throughout the county.
