A NEW day centre is helping older people take up activities and interests, while keeping their independence in the community.

Durham County Council has joined forces with Newcastle charity, St Cuthbert's Care, to establish the Blackhill Day Centre, in the hall of St Mary's Church, near Consett.

The service will be opened by Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, the Right Reverend Ambrose Griffiths, and county councillor John Davies, tomorrow.

Durham social services team manager for older people Paul Copeland said: "By basing the centre in the heart of the community we are aiming to help older people to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible, and improve their quality of life."

The centre, which can cater for 12 people a day, is managed by St Cuthbert's Care, with clients assessed and referred by Durham social services.

Activities are based on user needs and wishes, and include art, quizzes, music, gentle exercise, current affairs, bingo and outings.

St Cuthbert's deputy director Steve Hunter said: "St Cuthbert's Care is very excited by this development which allows us to demonstrate our commitment to those in need, and to put into action our mission statement which is to help people fulfil their potential."
